Ensembles and Forms

Component Organizations of the Band Program


The Fighting Indians Band is the entire band program (woodwinds, brass, percussion, color guard, Fighting Indians Band Boosters). All students are members of the Fighting Indians Band.

  • Marching Band is comprised of all woodwind, brass, percussion, and color guard students in the Fighting Indians Band. Participation in the Marching Band is required of all students.

  • Symphonic Band is the flagship concert band. Membership in the Symphonic Band is open to students in grades 9 through 12 and is determined by a highly competitive audition. Students in this ensemble can perform grade 5 and 6 literature and are the most serious and dedicated musicians in the Fighting Indians Band.

  • Philharmonic Band is a concert band comprised of students in grades 9-12. Membership in the Philharmonic Band is determined by audition. Students in the Philharmonic Band can play grade 3 and 4 literature and are aspiring to one day perform as a member of the Symphonic Band.

  • Instrumental Techniques is a band class comprised of students in grades 10-12. Students in this class focus on instrumental fundamentals. These students perform as part of the marching band. No audition is required for placement in this class. Any student wishing to perform with a concert band must audition. Once the audition is completed, they may perform as a member of the Philharmonic Band.

  • Chamber Winds/Brass Ensemble is a highly selected wind and brass ensemble with flexible instrumentation. Membership in the Chamber Winds/Brass Ensemble is appointed by the band directors and is comprised of students from the Symphonic Band. • Percussion Ensemble is open to all Fighting Indians Band students who play percussion instruments. Personnel is determined by the demands of the repertoire.

  • Orchestra Winds perform as part of the Vero Beach High School Symphony Orchestra. Personnel for the Orchestra Winds is appointed by the director and is comprised of students in Symphonic Band. The instrumentation of the orchestra winds is determined by the demands of the repertoire. 8

  • Color Guard is the visual ensemble of the Fighting Indians Band. Membership is determined by a highly competitive audition. The Color Guard performs as part of the Marching Band in the fall and as the Indoor Guard during the winter and spring.

  • Fighting Indians Band Boosters is the parent/community support organization for the Fighting Indians Band. Membership is open to anyone provided they pay any required annual membership dues and have a child in band.

  • Jazz Band is the flagship jazz band and is comprised of the most serious jazz students. Membership is comprised of students in grades 10 through 12 and is determined by a highly competitive audition.

  • Studio Jazz Band is an advanced-level jazz band comprised of students in grades 9 through 12. Membership is determined by audition.

  • Lab Band is comprised of students in grades 9 through 12. Membership is open to all students interested in jazz and who play a jazz instrument.

  • Band Leadership Team is comprised of elected and appointed student leaders. Membership is determined by an application process and is open to students in grades 10 through 12.
